Web psychotherapy 'just as good'

Therapy delivered via the internet is just as good as face-to-face sessions for treating depression, say Swedish researchers.

Web-based programmes could help counteract the current shortage of skilled therapists, they say. Cognitive behavioural therapy, the focus of the study, helps a person to change how they think and what they do to improve state of mind. The research is published in the British Journal of Psychiatry.

In findings that could revolutionise the way psychologists treat their patients, researchers at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and St Vincent’s Hospital have shown online treatments are just as effective as face-to-face therapies for a wide range of common mental disorders.

Anxiety, social phobias and depression are all conditions that respond well to clinician-supported internet-based treatments, the researchers found, with program participants recording recovery rates comparable to those in face-to-face therapy.

Internet-based PTSD Therapy May Help Overcome Barriers to Care

NIMH-funded researchers recently completed a pilot study showing that an Internet-based, self-managed cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression, with effects that last after treatment has ended. This study supports further development of PTSD therapies that focus on self-management and innovative methods of providing care to large numbers of people who do not have access to mental health care or who may be reluctant to seek care due to stigma. The researchers published their study in the November 2007 issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry.

In a study in the United Kingdom, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) sessions conducted online with a therapist reduced depression better than usual in-person care with a general practitioner, according to a study in the Aug. 22 issue of The Lancet.
